Thumper on Stadia

Thumper Review

Rhythm games have been a hit recently with a majority of them earning their fame on the mobile platform. We have seen games like Temple Run and Subway Surfer reach the heights of their fame thanks to the recent advancements in handheld devices. As a result of their success, many other rhythm games have followed in their footsteps, with some getting success but many failing in the attempt. Game developers needed to do something different, something new, perhaps a new platform would work?

That’s exactly what the developers at Drool thought about and they started working on a game that would give a new perspective to rhythm games. The team of two developers at Drool worked hard on and off to create a game that would be fun to play and to watch. The chief composer and artist for the game Brian Gibson really made a difference with his enchanting approach to the audio and visuals of the game now known as Thumper.

Thumper came on to the gaming scene back in 2016 on PC and PlayStation 4. The game racked up a lot of sales and the developers kept adding new platforms to reach more players across the globe. The Google Stadia version was released when the platform launched back in November 2019.

Gameplay

The out-run style game is pretty easy to play. The character/vehicle is driving on a strip and you have to steer it through the turns, protect it against obstacles, and time your actions to get a sort of bonus. Each level is different but at the end of each you get a boss-battle where timing your actions rewards you with a victory against the “boss”.

Graphics

Thumper is visually appealing. It puts you in a state of trance where it feels like you are transitioning from one dimension to another. The experience is surreal with this version looking just as perfect as the PC release – We experienced no graphical issues.

Audio

What’s more, the audio inside the game including the background track and the sound effects are crisp. They work in tandem with each other to create an ‘other-worldly’ experience.
